Report from Chairman of Recreation Ground & Open Spaces Committee

Mr Dedden reported that there was a reduction in broken glass on the Recreation Ground since the removal of the concrete.  The seasaw was awaiting a visit by an Engineer.

Ernest Whatmore raised the matter of the spikes on top of the railings on the Ringwood Road frontage of the Recreation Ground.  This matter was raised by the police officer inspecting the surrounds of the Memorial Hall land as being hazardous and potentially the basis for a damage claim.  Mr Dedden will ask the Clerk to seek advice from the insurance company regarding the potential hazards with regard to fencing and ditches.

Public Contribution

Mrs P Reeks of Moorlands Road brought the Trustees’ attention to the No Cycling byelaw and drew attention to the damage being caused by motor/moped cycling.  She also requested a hard play area (later discussed under 11b).  She stated that the grass was too long for playing football.

She expressed concern at the need for attention to the trees at the British Legion end of the Recreation Ground which overhung the Band Hall land. It was agreed that she should meet on site with the Council’s Tree Councillor, Nigel Christopher.

Future use of the Recreation Ground

Trustees were happy for organised junior football to take place on the Recreation Ground, but as yet no approach had been made by VCA/Rossgarth.

Suggestions for footpaths and additional equipment were not supported in the light of more recent suggestions which had come from the meeting at the Youth Club.  However, Mr Phill Cox would talk informally with young people for their ideas.

The Secretary read a letter from Phill Cox, the Youth Club Leader requesting permission to have a water slide on the Recreation Ground..  Proposed Mr Dedden, 2nd Mr Baker

Recommended that a water slide could be erected on the Recreation Ground on two occasions during the school summer holidays between 5pm and 8pm for a Youth Club function subject to suitable dates and the appropriate insurance.

Mr Dedden and Mr Christopher will meet with Mr Cox to discuss the feasibility and costings to erect a hard standing suitable for organised and casual netball, 5-a-side and other activities as discussed at a meeting held with Town Councillors on 12th May 04.
