Jean Hazel

Born in 1944 Jean was brought up in Swanley, Kent, and was educated at St Joseph’s Convent School for Girls, Sidcup and North West Kent College of Technology, Dartford.  Her first job was with Vickers in London, and then banking, working first for Coutts Bank in Lombard Street, and then Barclays DCO.  After her children were born she taught business skills at a local comprehensive school before moving to Dorset with her husband during the 1970s when Barclays Bank International moved their main office to Poole.  From there she and her family moved to Cheshire and then back to London with Barclays Bank, eventually coming back to an area she loves.

Jean comes from a generation when housing was the most important item on the agenda for local councils after the Second World War, when thousands of properties were built to house homeless Londoners.  She has worked with a large housing association predominant in London and the south east and has seen at first hand the benefits of shared ownership, rented schemes and most specifically housing for keyworkers.

Whilst living in Cheshire Jean became a Samaritan – the training she received enabled her to develop her people skills and her business experience has put her in good stead to listen and get things done.

With her interest in road traffic issues and the availability of public transport in rural areas, she is part of the East Dorset Road Partnership Scheme as well as a contact for the Neighbourhood Watch, and she is also a member of the following:

East Dorset District Council
East Dorset Youth Council
Licensing Committee

Rate Relief Sub-Committee

Outside Body Membership:
Dorset Archaeological Committee (Deputy)
Member of the Verwood Kabin Project Management Committee
