Buying of the first
poppy |
|
Verwood Mayor, Councillor Mrs. Toni Coombs purchased the first poppy for the town’s Poppy Appeal launch from Mr. Norman Egerton who served in the Royal Navy during and after the Second World War. He
served as a Medic aboard a tank landing craft on D-Day, delivering Sherman
tanks and their American crews to Omaha Beach where they lost 6,000
personnel, killed on the first day. Later he served on the destroyer Volage,
which was sunk by a mine in the Mediterranean, and then on a fleet
minesweeper making the seas safe again after the war. |
