THE
VERWOOD STROKE CLUB |
|
The disruption of blood supply to the
brain, commonly known as a stroke, is the leading cause of adult disability
and the second most common cause of death in the UK. Strokes occur suddenly,
usually without any warning, and the results affect patients physically,
mentally, emotionally. It is an attack which profoundly alters not only the
person suffering the stroke, but everyone in that person's circle. Life
plans, hopes and expectations are changed forever, literally 'at a stroke',
and everything has to start anew. The consequences to all can be
devastating.
The Verwood Stroke Club provides in this
community a valuable source of empathy, information and encouragement to
those who have suffered a stroke and their families. The Club has no
income except for voluntary contributions and their own fund raising, yet
fills important gaps in aftercare left by the NHS.

MIND |
|
With one in four people likely to experience a mental
health problem every year it is astonishing that those with mental health
problems are still 'invisible' within our society. Mental ill-health is no
respecter of class, physical health, wealth, age or race. It has been with
us from the beginning, so surely in our modern compassionate society, it is
essential that we turn to those who suffer in the same way as we regard
fractured bones, 'flu or appendicitis. MIND, the National Association for
Mental Health, works hard through many channels to change society's
attitude, to inform and support sufferers and to campaign for better
national health provision.
